Today we did a quick review via the A faire and then took a quiz.  At the end of class, we discussed the new project and the last extra credit option of the year.

Today we discussed the poem by Rene Philombe “L’homme qui te ressemble” as a class, went over the homework and our choices, and did a News in Slow French. 

A Faire:  Finish discussion of poem in group, then individually respond to the 3 questions after the poem (Analyse) in French with 2-3 sentences for each.

Today in class we talked about our weekend, practiced some conditional and looked more closely at some of the spreadsheet questions in small groups.

Today we discussed négritude and the poem by Léon Damas.  Then we went to the computer lab to do some research around American minorities (see TEC).

Travail en Classe (TEC):  Activité: Études (back page of l’Afrique packet).  Choose an American minority to do a brief study on.  The idea is to potentially make connections between the colonial experience and the immigrant experience and relate our study of Africa/France back to the US.  Please do the bulk of this study in French…if you want to add additional details in English, that’s ok.

Mardi 30/04\Mercredi 01/05

Today we practiced using the conditional and continued to develop our understanding of colonization and the consequences through a reading on “la négritude”.

A Faire:  Activite: Problèmes (l’Afrique packet-back page)  Choose 5 countries and write 2-3 problems that are the most serious and 2-3 that are the least serious for each.

Ex:  En Chine, _____ et _____  sont les problèmes le plus sérieux.  ____ et ____ sont le moins sérieux.
 
Travail en Classe (TEC):  In groups of 2-3, read 1st page of new packet using reading protocol from African stories (read out loud, discuss, look up words, etc).  Make sure you understand paragraphs before moving on to reading and interpreting the poem.  After finishing, respond to the following questions in English:
      1.  What is the message of the poem?
      2. How does it represent “negritude”?
      3. How does Damas express it in the poem
Devoirs:  finish reading/poem and answer questions with details; identify, label and study African Countries (in négritude packet)

Today in class we practiced the conditional by discussing the weekend homework (pg 434 #4), and learned to use the conditional to express what one would/could do if certain circumstances were the reality (“si” clause + result clause).

Déjeuner français—demain!!!

Bring your lunch and come meet and talk with some of the young French students visiting Grant while earning participation credit and possible extra credit!  Think about questions or topics you want to discuss before you come (it will help you to say more!)  On va parler français!!   Room 128, @ lunch tomorrow.  Hope to see you there!

Today we continued to practice the future tense and learned the structure of the conditional.  We discussed the reading “l’Afrique francophone” and the questions in small groups and then in the large group, focusing particularly on the concepts of the revolution and how colonization/slavery were justified.

A Faire:  Write 5 sentences using at least 5 of the vocab words found on the front page of the Africa packet.  Some helpful verbs might be:  supprimer, disparaître, aider, continuer, changer, augmenter, etc…

Travail en Classe (TEC):  In small groups, we wrote a paragraph summary of the reading as a way to check understanding.

Today we continued our discussion (the explanation) of the Africa project, Mrs. Battle shared some valuable resources and info about citing sources, and then we went to the library for research.

Directions:
  1.  Please do not change any formatting of the spreadsheet without prior approval.  Just input data for your country!  If you make a mistake, no worries, just see me for help:)
  2.  Make sure you scroll to the bottom and choose the tab (sheet) for the correct period, 4th/5th.
  3.  You should input data in French if possible.  If the words are clearly unfamiliar (like some industry, agriculture, and government vocabulary) then you may use English.  You may have to cut/paste from word for accents.
  4.  Some of the categories have been formatted for percents and numbers. 
  5. For categories that require more than one item to input (languages, religions, agriculture, industry, etc..)  include only the top 3-4 examples.
